As I am making my blog a little more public today, I thought I would quickly explain what I mean by this word and why I love it so much. Let's start with how the dictionary defines sojourn.
so·journ [n. soh-jurn; v. soh-jurn, soh-jurn]
noun
1.a temporary stay.
verb (used without object)
2.to stay for a time in a place; live temporarily:
That means that a sojourner is a person that lives somewhere temporarily.
Scripture calls the Israelites "sojourners" a lot in the Old Testament. They were sojourners as they wandered for forty years between their flee from Egypt and their entrance into the Promised Land. When they finally reached this land that had been promised to them by God, they were no longer sojourners. They had reached the place that God longed for them to live in permanently as His people and as His nation.
I love that image, and I believe that it is similar for us as believers today. This life is temporary. This broken world is not our home for eternity because our true citizenship is in Heaven, where the Lord is preparing a house for each and everyone one of us who seeks Him as the saviour of our lives. I am living here temporarily, waiting to meet Jesus in my permanent residence in Heaven.
& for that reason I am a sojourner.
